The Hawaiian Civic Club of Honolulu (HCCH) was founded on December 6, 1918 by Prince Jonah Kūhiō Kalaniana‘ole at a time when socio-economic indicators were dismal for many Hawaiians. In order to help turn this situation around, Prince Kūhiō Kalaniana‘ole had three founding objectives in mind when he established the Hawaiian Civic Club of Honolulu:
1) Elevate (restore) the social status of Hawaiians. 2) Elevate (restore) the intellectual status of Hawaiians. 3) Increase pride in race heritage and Hawaiian identity.
Since our club’s founding, there have been many efforts to help meet these objectives. Club members strive to continue the mission and vision of the Prince by enhancing the lives of Native Hawaiians through participation with, and support of, various social and civic activities such as raising funds for Lunalilo Home, participating in Kawaiaha’o and Mauna ‘Ala services, and sharing the voices of Kaiolohiaomamala (the HCCH choir) with the Hawaiian community. HCCH also sponsors forums for community outreach, legislative efforts concerning Native Hawaiian issues, and supports fellow civic clubs and associations.

Chief among HCCH’s activities is the support of higher education for Native Hawaiians. Since 1928 and the very first Holokū Ball, HCCH has awarded over $1.2 million to over 1,900 students in pursuit of educational goals in Hawaiʻi and on the mainland.
